Broomfield First

Broomfield First has returned from its "hiatus" of the past 7-8 months. Due to the holidays and then extensive involvement in the primary election process, as well as the tragic death of its second web master, we have not been able to keep this site current. However, local information has been continually monitored and collected, and updated postings will now resume again. We apologize for the lapse in updates.

While watchful of other city and county news, it is important that the activities of Wal-Mart be closely monitored as they proceed. We must watch for any violations of the city/county code, such as occurred on the 5-acre Drake property approximately 3 months ago. (This is the land directly south of the Wal-Mart site, which will provide for a bank and several fast food joints, like Del Taco and Carl's Jr.) Broomfield First is proud to have been integrally involved with the three-week work delay resulting from Drake Realty not conforming to the city code. They started grading work without ensuring that no live animals still existed on that property. In fact, several prairie dogs lived there and were being killed by slow suffocation and/or bulldozer blades. The protest of Robin Hoek, founder of "Green Action Network," Judy Enderle, and Broomfield First's founder, Dottie Rawsky, resulted in new rules for future developers as well as improved procedures and oversight by city employees. Regardless of how you feel about prairie dogs, we hope you'll agree that painful, inhumane annihilation is not the decent way for a civilized society to treat defenseless creatures. And we'd like to see the current use of aluminum phosphide (AP) to poison these animals replaced with the more humane carbon monoxide. Better yet, Broomfield should devote some of its Open Space to relocation of displaced wildlife.
